Target and challenge

When most people think of body image, they think about aspects of physical appearance, attractiveness, and beauty. But body image is so much more. It's our mental representation of ourselves; it's what allows us to contemplate ourselves. Our body perceptions, feelings, and beliefs govern our life plan—whom we meet, whom we marry, the nature of our interactions, our day-to-day comfort level. The goal of this project was to provide easy access to help needed to the women dealing with body image disorder. The perks? No insurance, traveling, or appointments necessary. Discretion and convenience are key.

The Process

Creative Design Brief

Background Design and Problem:

Most of us have something we don't like about our appearance — a crooked nose, an uneven smile, or eyes that are too large or too small. And though we

may fret about our imperfections, they don’t interfere with our daily lives. But people dealing with body image disorder think about their real or perceived flaws for hours each day, which causes severe emotional distress and interfere with their daily functioning. They may miss work or school, avoid social situations and isolate themselves, even from family and friends, because they fear others will notice their flaws. The mobile app OwnBody is developed for women who want to recover from body image disorder. Ownbody will be a combination of resources with a personal recovery app.

Key Scenarios:

  • A belief that others take special notice of your appearance in a negative way or mock you

  • A strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly or deformed

  • Frequently seeking reassurance about your appearance from others

  • Avoiding social situations

Key Principles:

  • Changing thinking and dealing with a body image disorder

  • Showing progress and monitoring progress

  • Create simple tasks that they can do and follow

  • Improve the quality of life and overall day-to-day functioning

Business Constraints:

  • Copyright issues

  • Privacy concerns

  • Approvals from experts

Secondary Research: Internet

I searched for other apps for inspiration. I wanted to see what features they had chosen to include to see if I might want to do the same. There are many things to consider when designing an app like this. I wanted people to download it and keep it on their phone for the reason of helping them have a positive image. This is why adding value to the user becomes very important.

Stakeholders Mapping:

Women from the age of 14-50 years are the major stakeholders in this project. With the help of stakeholder mapping, I was able to discover the key issues, what stakeholders involved in the design process and how much attention and effort stakeholders should be given to keep the project on track.

Journey Mapping:

Customer journey mapping helped me consciously understand the touchpoints as opposed to considering the whole experience without any compartmentalization. This pushed me to determine where to isolate and improve. Customer journey maps helped me across all departments better empathize with users, find places to improve the experience, and ultimately collaborate together more effectively.

Persona:

Maya is a copywriter at an advertising agency. She has been dealing with body image disorder for a few years now. Dealing with body image disorder keeps her away from socializing and is always critical about how she looks. She is looking for other options.

Storyboard:

I create a low-fidelity narrative that focuses on people and their actions, thoughts, goals, and emotions.

Wireframing:

I created sections that were most on user's minds during interviews. I made sure that the navigation on the app was simple so that the information is easily accessible to the users.

High Fidelity Mockup:

Validate:

I sat with two of the users I interviewed and showed them the app. I received positive feedback with a few call-outs.
