Target and challenge
Keeping your photography portfolio up to date can be tough but finding the right mobile app can make it a lot easier. Thus the user base of this project consists of photographers who want to build an online presence for their work. The goal of this project was to build a platform for photographers to promote their work without going to multiple photography applications.
The Process

Primary Research: Interviews
I made a list of sample questions and interviewed 5-10 people. A mix of men and women.
-
How long have they been doing photography?
-
Do they do photography full-time/ part-time/ hobby?
-
What kind of applications do they use for post-processing?
-
What applications do they use to showcase their work?
-
What goals do they want to achieve with a photography app?
-
How long does it take to post their work online?
-
How do they promote themselves to get business?
-
How do they reach their potential client?
-
Where and how do they showcase their portfolio?
Secondary Research: Internet
I searched for other photography apps for inspiration. I wanted to see what features they had chosen to include to see if I might want to do the same. There are many things to consider when designing any app but for something very specific like this there needs to be a reason for people to download it and keep it on their phone. This is why adding value to the user becomes very important.
Stakeholders Mapping:
Full-time, part-time and freelance photographers along with photography buyers (marketing/advertising agencies, creative studios, company creative teams) are the major stakeholders who are using the photography app on a daily basis. With the help of stakeholder mapping, I was able to discover the key issues, what stakeholders involved in the design process and how much attention and effort each stakeholder should be given to keep the project on track.

Persona:
Meera is a wedding photographer who has been living in Toronto for the past 3 years. She is trying to build an online presence for her business so that she can build a portfolio and reach potential clients.

Storyboard:
I create a low-fidelity narrative that focuses on people and their actions, thoughts, goals, and emotions.
IDEATE

Design Principles:
-
Shape: Rectangle, square and circular shapes will dominate the app. Rectangle and square shapes will be used as frames for photography and text. The circular shape will be used for profile pictures and uploading pictures.
-
Balance: It will ensure that no one element overpowers the others. The app will have wide margins and spacing so that the information is well presented and easy to use. Good spacing along with wide margins will make the app look less cluttered and pleasing to the eye.
-
Unity & Harmony: This will create a sense of cohesion in the space. The harmonious factor of the app will be that it is easy and enterprising. It will have clear navigation and icons guiding the users to access information easily.

Wireframing:
I created sections that were most on user's minds during interviews. I made sure that the navigation on the app was simple so that the information is easily accessible to the users.

Validate:
I sat with two of the users I interviewed and showed them the app. I received positive feedback with a few call-outs.
